Actually, I've never left a voicemail either in my native language or in English. I think maybe it's because of the living habit. Telecommunication  technology developed so fast over the past twenty years. But in China, it only slowly become popular after 1990s, before that telecommunication was expensive and rare for ordinary people. So just when everyone had gotten used to making phone calls, the internet emerged, and then smartphone and instant messaging APPs appeared. So we just skipped the stage when the people in developed countries were using the voicemail function, and as a result most Chinese didn't form the habit of leaving voicemail.
