The first item in the news today is the recent elections that took place across the country. This was a crucial vote, which may see a dramatic change in how the country develops over the coming years. Overall, a 54.5 per cent voter turnout was registered. This represents an increase of 11 per cent over the previous election and six per cent above the average for the past 50 years. There has also been a slight change in demographics, with an increase in youth turnout in the 18- to 24- and 24- to 29-year-old brackets. Despite this increase, young people are still less likely to vote than older people; 84 per cent of voters in the 70 plus age group came to the polling stations.

Moving on, the global digital powerhouse ONK today posted quarterly results which were above forecast. Back in March, Tim Bolling, CEO, issued a profit warning over fears that there would be losses following the recall of their leading product, the 40d device. In fact, the company posted quarterly revenue of US$14.8 billion which represents an increase of 11 per cent from the same quarter a year ago. They also announced that they had sold 21 million 40d devices over the quarter. The company has provided the information that with this level of revenue, there will be a gross margin of 34 to 35 per cent, ultimately leading to a US$1.20 per share cash dividend awarded to shareholders.

And in our final news item we ask, will we soon be saying goodbye to coins and notes forever? The nationwide trend of using cashless payment options is increasing. There are a number of reasons for this development. A key reason for this is a growing interest in reducing the number of items people need to leave their homes with. As almost everyone carries a smartphone with them, and many people also have smartwatches, the ability to pay for things using one of these two technologies is particularly appealing. More and more retailers are accepting cashless payments and in some cases they've stopped accepting cash altogether.

Currency notes and coins are symbols of a country. Countries in the world refresh memories of their heroes through currency notes and coins. Otherwise new generations would never know their heroes and their deeds. In short currency notes and coins has their own attraction. All ages of people in the world are like currency notes and coins.

Hello, thanks for the audio. It was tricky at the beginning, but I got used to it. I have an issue with this English exercise: - Lina,. , was very pleased to attend the meeting. The options to filling the gap are: Too, also and as well as. Could you help me please?

Hello GiulianaAndy,

Please note that we don't normally help our users with questions from other sources, as it's challenging enough for us to keep up with all the questions about our own materials.

'too' is the correct option here. I'd refer you to the Cambridge Dictionary page on these three words.

All the best,

In 2019 Peru was the 5th best economy in Latin-American but at the same time my country was one of those invested the least in public health. The government invested only 3.3% of GDP. To put it in context, in Chile, a neighboring country, they invested a 5% of GPD in health. Two years later we realize corruption is more dangerous than any virus.

It is only the beggining of 2021 and Brazil is already facing a "second wave" of the virus. Cases are rising around 50% over the last two weeks and the hospital beds are at 90% of occupation. Brazilians are still waiting for a vaccine to come, but the government has no certain date to start immunizing people, saying just "late January/early February".

Since I can remember our country has always had high unemployment averages, before the pandemic percentage had double digits around 10.9%. And now at least 4 millions of Colombian don't have an employ, due quarantine unemployment has reached 20 per cent and in some cities it is about 30 per cent. Just to open the economy again doesn't fix those issues. All this affects the demand overall, not just for people who don't have money to buy due to his unemployment condition insead people which reduce his demand for fear of losing his current job. The government has established new laws to try to increase the employability and reduce the hit to the economy left by covid but are not enough.

The number of patients contracting the Covid-19 virus is continuously increasing in countries like USA, Philippines and Brazil. Due to the rigorous stages of vaccine testing, the earliest is expected to be released on April 2021. But this poses another question: when will this vaccine reach third-world country like the Philippines and Brazil? For this reason, scientists speculates that herd immunity can possibly stop the spread of the virus. However, this will require 66% or one-third of the country's population (or local) to be positive of the disease.

A very important topic is aporophobia, this concept is "new" (it’s a little known topic) even though it has been practiced for decades. But what is aporophobia? This is the fear or contempt for poor people. It is a very recurrent theme in migration, more than 80 percent of migrants suffer from it. It is a negative factor that affects millions of individuals, its practice has increased in recent years and not much is done about it in Mexico and around the world

To be honest this one was the most difficult until now, talk about statistics and this kind of thing it’s new for me. I could hardly understand when I first heard the audio and read the transcript. But let’s try.I’ll write about Christianity Christianity the world’s biggest religion with 2.1 billion of adherents according with 2010 researchers (representing 31 per cent of earth’s population) but it’s subject to lose this rank to Islam religion in the next few years. The population of Islam are rising a lot while the Christian population it’s growing gradually. In 2050 they expect the Christian population to be 2.9 of the population and Islam population to be 2.8 which it’s a very close number considering the difference between both now. (Christianity 2.1 / Islam 1.something)

Let me tell you about the COVID-19 situation in my country, whereas I can't come up with any other idea and this theme is the hottest topic around the world. So, we have over 145 000 cases of coronavirus, + 2582 per day. It's almost our national anti record, so the situation is far from the end. I'm happy to know, that over 65000 recovered despite it's a dangerous virus and over health care system is far from ideal (mildly speaking). Of course, there is sad news too, 3023 people are dead. It's a bitter blow for the country and a huge grief for their families. The situation is complicated by the fact that the academic year in schools and universities has restarted. And I'm really worried about that because I have two kids and one of them attends school and the younger one attends kindergarten. I hope we can escape this danger and we try to be careful. And I wish all of you to be safe and healthy. Cheers!

However, the trend here is that so many individuals, firms and governments of different countries embraced this policy, inspite of some barriers to its effectiveness and efficiency.

The last poll about people perception of the country shows that the people's pessimism is increasing, with about 79% thinking that the country situation is worse, that represents an increment of 9 points in comparison to a poll three months before. That perception is reflected on the president's approval, about 70% of the people don't approve the way of the president to manage the country. That is a bad indicator, considering that the president only has one year in the position. The current general strike is an effect of that pessimism too. That forecasts, that in the next three years are going to happen more social protests.

Politically, Colombia is a country that has been having an increasing abstensionism when it comes to elections of any kind. According to the analyisis the framework of the register of the last couple of years' elections, the turnout rates show up to 50% of abstensionism, which happens to be overwhelming figures when assuming the number of demographics of people allowed to vote. Furthermore, it's known for a fact that the average electoral participation has remaining the same in spite of the raising of population since 2013. Everything seems to indicate that the youngest are who least vote since six out of 10 young people state don't voting because of their dejection regarding current elections .

Hello nikoslado,

The verb 'see' here is close to 'show' in meaning. It tells us what the speaker thinks is going to happen in the given time frame.
