Read a dialogue where three people negotiate who does what to achieve a task.

All right, so I've divided up the tasks among the three of us planning this event like this:

@Jen: make guest list, schedule social media announcements, arrange room set-up, organise musicians
@Ed: book catering, send out invitations, design posters, book speakers
@Mike: reserve rooms, design invitations, write and publish blog post, get emcee

But please don't feel like we need to stick to this. If you prefer to do something else, feel free to say so.

teamwork is very very important in every business. if the boss plans an event with our team members they usually divide work and send emails to the best colleague.

Hello, I've a question about how to practise texts like this. The problem is, there are lots of information so is it wrong to find and read some sentences again to answer the questions bellow or is it best to read the text just once and then to answer the questions below ? Because it's almost impossible for me to memorize all of these informations in the text by reading it just one time.

Hello orhannt,

It's really difficult to say what is best for you without knowing you better, but in general I'd encourage you to experiment with how you approach pages like this one. It sounds as if you've already done this -- you find it difficult to complete the questions if you've only read the text once, and so you've gone back and read them again to try to find the answers. That is perfectly natural and I expect many other users do the exact same thing.

If you are able to read a text and then answer all of the questions without looking back, that may be a sign that you could perhaps try a more difficult text, i.e. one at the B2 level instead of the B1. And if you find that you get the answers to many questions wrong even after reading the text two or three times, perhaps you should try A2-level pages for some time and then come back to this one.

If you are working at the right level, the tasks should be challenging, but not impossible. It sounds to me as if you are in the right place.

Actually, I work by my own, so almost all the time it is not neccessary to me ti divide the work in teams. What really I do is planning a timeline with the aims of my work. However, I've been part of teams, and I know it is important have objectives in common ang get them together. As a part of this, we have achieved our goals, and the satisfaction is great.

Normally, in my project teams form University each member of the group decides what part of the project wants to do and then when each member of the group finishes their part we do aprevious meeting to see if the project is okay or if we can improve a part.

Hello, great lesson. However, I have a question which is about this difference: "I have a lot of things on my mind right now" and "I have someone in mind" So.... In which situations should I use "on my mind" and "in my mind"?

It's a good question! There is a difference in meaning.

  • If you have something on your mind, it means you're worrying about it. I've got a lot on my mind is a particularly common phrase.
  • If you have something or someone in mind, it means you have a plan or intention about that thing/person. For example, if your company has a job vacancy and you know somebody who is perfect for the job, you could say I have someone in mind and then suggest that person to your manager. Or, if you have ideas about how you want to celebrate your next birthday, you could say I have something in mind to your friends/family.

In my project teams the tasks are divided by specialist. For instance, the marketing specialist development the tast related with marketing and social media, the quality specialist do the tasks related with the customer relationship and the operations specialist do the tasks related with the development of the project

When I was at university, we used to schedule a first meeting to define the tasks and divide them among the team members. The usual procedure was the following: first, we created a list of the tasks and then we started a process in which each of them was assigned to the member who chose to work on it according to their skills and abilities. Tough tasks were often the most difficult to assign but we always found a way to negociate.

Our tasks are usually divided according to the group leader. The assignments are given by project leader to other members of the group. We have to accept the task given to us either we like it or not.

That’s the best way to divide tasks into projects, take in account team opinions and skills, But sometimes this could be a bad idea if some partners in the group are not agree and both want to make the sames tasks, so the leader have to choice before if the team has the maturity to swap some tasks.

Well, I don't have a work team at the moment, because I'm the only one person in my department, at the moment but on my previous job, we stablished a leader who would it be able to recognized the skills of every one. After, we created a brain storming and share our opinions to find the best way to complete the project and obtain the best results so I think it's important to keep a good communication with the crew, respet their point of view and hear them.

We usually divided tasks according to the decision of groop leader.How to assign depends on the member's skills,passion,trustworthiness,already tasks and characteristic.I think division of tasks has huge impact to performance the team,this is because if the member had the task which different from his ability,he couldn't show high performance absolutely.

In my project team tasks are usually divided by our project manager. I can't say it's always right but something like that, anyway. We have a quite strict structure in our company, so all the tasks go down from the director to the heads of departments and further to the team leaders and finally to the doers. Yeap, the very long chain which includes both vertical and horizontal links. Any initiative doesn't meet acceptance. Sadly, but it's true. Anyway, I always try to have an influence on my task if needed, to be able to do it as best as I can. Even if my boss seems not very happy about that.

How to divide and share tasks is always a little hard decision. We would divide tasks based on skills or characteristics the members have. I would like to assign the tasks according to the loads.

When I divided tasks, I usually discuss with friends and decide each role. There are a lot of role to success the project. Among them, the leader is carefully decided. I think the leader is the best important role. The leader must be someone who can put all team members and their opinions. The leader must take advantage of member’s good point and activity discuss with team members. It can be said the leader determines success of project. If the leader isn’t able to lead all team members, the project will fail. But, don’t leave everything to the leader. It is important that all team members cooperate.

I think that the leader is the most important. Leaders have to divide tasks and organize opinions. Leader has to decide by team members because they have to do tasks efficiently. So not only the leader but also other members have to take responsibility. I think that it is the most efficient to do tasks that suit their personal abilities. Above all, I believe that success of any project depends on the well behaved and fair leader. In my project, if I were a leader, I would have divided up the tasks according to talents of group members. Because everyone hasn't equal features. Someone can write a code, or someone can meet people well, or someone can be perfection making a catering and service tasks. A leader should realize the organisations by examining the same events. This can lead the different ideas. And I think someone should be tasked with looking for the another same organisations.

I think we need a leader who can lead the group to accomplish the task. Without the person, the group would fall apart. But it is a mistake for only that leader to say opinion. A person who can respect the opinions of others is also good for leaders. So we have to talk with the group, respect each other’s opinions, and work carefully. I also think leaders need to identify and make the most of the strengths and weakness of other members. So when I become the leader, I listen to everyone’s opinions and put them together.

I think it is important not only leader but also other members. Of cause project team needs leader because there is a need for someone to listen to everyone and put together the content. But the teams in which the leaders have power are not good. Therefore, it is important for everyone to share their opinions equally. We usually divided tasks according to the characteristics of the members. For example, a person who have leadership is a leader. A person who have imagination is an Idea man. It's important that making use of each special skills.

Here, 'off' is an informal way of saying 'from' -- Jen says she can take that task from Ed's tasks and do it herself. That is, she offers to do the poster design for him so that he can focus on organising the musicians.

I profoundly believe that it's important not only the existence of leader but also other people. Of course we should choose the leader more carefully. Because the leader must consider all member of opinion and discuss on even ground. Actually when I was a juniorhigh school student, I was the president of the student council. But it was so hard. And at the same time I felt strongly the importance of friends. That's why, we should discuss a lot and take cherge of each tasks.

I think the leader should not divide the tasks and each project team members should decide them because every member has his or her own strength and weakness of the area. If the leader decides the tasks in advance, those who are not familiar with the field don't know what to do and how to do it. And therefore they have to look for those who know the field well like a chat above. This takes a lot of time. When we make a plan, it is essential to do it smoothly and efficiently. I learned that doing things that I have never done is a good experience but it is sometimes necessary to leave it to others.

I won't be a leader. Because there is a better person to be a leader . And which part I take is always something small, but I hope it's very important. I do my best in every project. I think it’s very important that the group leader is someone like Ed. Only having a leader doesn’t work well for a group. Although he is a leader, he listens to the opinions of the members and when he thinks it’s good he obediently incorporates it in group’s activities. We feel like we’re naturally following a leader like him who also takes in the opinions of other members, which results in a better group activity. It’s a win-win relationship with each other. I want the leader of the group I will enter into to be a leader like him. And if I ever become a leader, I want to be like him.

I usually divide our class to four or more groups. Each group has the same job, but they work on different projects. For example, I choose some titles and then make teams. They usually select the title by their console of members. Each team should hand me back two weeks before the final test. Also they usually make this decision that who and how should present their seminar in front of the class. Therefore, I don't have exact projects like conference which is mentioned above. Usually, the leader of the event divides tasks to some division, and each division has their own leader. Each head of divisions are choosen by their experience and skill. Then, they held open recruitment for the members. After the group division was made, they will divide the tasks to their members. The member also can change their job with other member, like happen in the text above.
