Do the preparation task first. Then read the text and tips and do the exercises.
Preparation
The principal of a local college has asked you to write a report on the advantages and disadvantages of working abroad in the summer holidays. She would like to know if the college should recommend 'working holidays' to its students.
A report on students' experiences of working abroad
Introduction
Currently, approximately 25 per cent of Hawthorne College students work abroad during the summer break. This report aims to show the benefits and drawbacks of working overseas in order to decide whether the college should recommend the experience to its students.
To prepare for this report, a sample of 100 students were interviewed, 23 of whom had worked abroad. This is a summary of their comments.
Benefits
According to the students interviewed, working overseas during the summer holidays can bring several benefits. Most of all, students can improve their foreign language skills by working in a non-English speaking country. This may help them get a better job in the future. Additionally, learning about a different culture and way of life makes people more open-minded. A further advantage is that students may become more confident when they learn practical skills to help them live independently later in life, for example, finding accommodation and cooking for themselves.
Drawbacks
However, a large number of interviewees mentioned drawbacks as well. Students who need to study over the summer will find it difficult to do so while working abroad. Most significant of all are finance issues: only a minority of students are able to afford travel expenses, accommodation and visas. In addition, students may have to take low-income jobs if they are not fluent in the local language, so they may struggle to cover their expenses.
Conclusion and recommendation
Working abroad may improve students' language skills and confidence. However, students often need to earn money during the holidays to support their studies and working abroad may not provide the opportunity to save. Also, the cost of travel means that only students who are able to afford it have the chance to do this. Therefore, the college should only recommend working abroad if there is financial support from the college for students that need it.
Tips
- The basic structure of a report is usually the same:
- Introduction (including the purpose of the report and how the data was collected)
- Findings (including benefits and drawbacks if appropriate)
- Conclusion and recommendations.
- Use headings for each section.
- Use formal vocabulary (e.g. Currently, ... / in order to ... / Therefore, ...) to give the report a formal style.
- The ideas and conclusions should be objective. Use non-personal subjects (e.g. This report aims to … ) and passive structures (e.g. 100 students were interviewed).
- You can also use may to show that something is not certain (e.g. This may help them get a better job in the future).
As always, it all depends on your abilities and attitude. For some students, working abroad may sound like a great adventure and a huge opportunity for growth. On the other hand, it is easy to imagine that working abroad is not affordable for everyone. Therefore, if you feel that working abroad is something you can achieve, and perhaps even a form of self-fulfillment, then just do it. Otherwise, if you think it might cost you too much, you don't have to do it.
A report on students' experiences of working abroad.
Introduction.
The main objective of this report is to show the advantages and disadvantages of working abroad during the summer holidays in order to decide if the school should recommend the experience to its students.
To prepare for his report, a group of 75 students were interviewed 25 of whom had experienced working abroad.
Benefits.
According to the students interviewed, working abroad can bring several benefits. The main advantage is that students can improve their language skills. This may help them get a better job in the future. In addition, students have reported that learning about a different culture has made them more open-minded. Furthermore, students may become more confident and independent.
Drawbacks.
However, some students pointed out that there are some drawbacks as well. Some students need to study over the summer and find it difficult to do it while working abroad. The most significant drawback is that living costs abroad are expensive: travel expenses, accommodation, and visas are not free, so students have to work. In addition, students may have to take low-income jobs due to a lack of language skills. As a result, only a minority of students are able to afford their costs.
Conclusion and recommendation.
Taking all these points into account, it can be concluded that working abroad may increase their language skills and confidence, also, their independance. However, travel expenses are expensive and a lot of students can not afford them. Therefore, it is recommendes that only students that account with financial support should go to working abroad.
That would be really good opportunity to improve my language and make new friendships working in abroad. However it's getting impossible especially some of the countries like Turkey because of the visa problems. Also transport and hosting expenses are so high in nowadays for students. Therefore it's getting impossible going an abroad ,working and helping other people
Would be great to work abroad during the holidays when I was a student, but as mentioned in the report the main trouble is travel expenses, the second - visas... and related expenses. Students not often have enough money. Thanks, God, I work remotely and don't need to find job in every new country I travel.
I think it is good to work abroad in the holidays. You can make new friends, learn about culture and more.
In my opinion, working abroad is a great opportunity. It has many advantages, such as the chance to earn more money, experience a different culture, visit new and interesting places, and listen to and observe people speaking another language. Of course, there are also some disadvantages. For example, it might be difficult to get a visa, and sometimes the accommodation you get is not very comfortable. However, despite these possible problems, i would still recommend going abroad. It can give you a unique experience and help you save money for something special.
I think working abroad is a good experience. So you can learn other cultures and history of country. Although there is a negative side of working abroad. Sometimes it is expensive or there are difficulties with lenguage. But time will pass and you will get used to everything.
I would not like to work abroad during the summer break. I acknowledge that it is a great opportunity to get to know a new culture, and to learn new languages. But I need to save up as much money as possible during the holidays, so I have to stay at home working.
I enjoy learning new skills in any form, whether by working in a foreign country or in my local community. It is a fact that being in a new environment activates our survival and adaptability skills, making us more observant of the world around us. As a result, these experiences strengthen our ability to handle new challenges with confidence. Therefore, I strongly believe that if we have the resources, we should explore new places to learn about different cultures and human behavior.
